At sea in Northern Greece
17 kilometers of uninterrupted beach awarded with a blue flag. The settlement attracts thousands of visitors during the summer season. It is close to major attractions, 5 km from Amphipoli, about 60 km from the cities of Kavala, Drama and Serres and 100 km from Thessaloniki.
Costa Ofrynio is located between two cities that flourished in ancient times: Amphipolis and Philippi, which were connected in ancient times by a great road - Egnatia. The port of Amphipolis was Chiona, today's Costa Ofrynio, from where Alexander the Great's fleet set out for its long march to India.
Philippi, on the other hand, marks the beginning of Christian Europe, as it is the first European city where the apostle of the Orthodox peoples Paul proclaimed Christianity and baptized the first European Christian - Lydia.
Amphipoli, just 6 km from Costa Ofrynio, is the starting point for the wider area. The "Lion of Amphipolis" and the modern excavations at the "Tomb of Casta" have generated great worldwide interest in the whole area, which is based on the long and glorious history of this place.
The archaeological museum in the area, but also a number of Roman, ancient Greek and Byzantine monuments, give the visitor a strong motivation to visit and admire them up close.
According to the archaeologist Dimitris Lazaridis, the monument was built in honor of the Laomedon of Mytilene, an important admiral of Alexander the Great, and it is believed to be on the top of the recently found Kasta grave. The figure of the lion's body has a height of 4 meters, the head already has a width of 2 meters, completely made of marble, which points to high educated craftsmanship. With its present base of another 4 meters, a total height of 8 meters is achieved. Imposing and powerful, where can have been its original location?
Apart from Costa Ofrynio being a beautiful sea destination, in the immediate vicinity rises the "golden" mountain of Pangeo, offering the visitor the possibility of "mountain and sea".
Mount Pangeo is a place of particular natural beauty, included in the pan-European ecological network NATURA, with rich flora and fauna, forest paths, but also caves with rock paintings. In other words, this is a real challenge for lovers of alternative tourism!
In Costa Ofrynio there are also two marinas where sailing boats can dock, and small boats are available to the visitor if you decide to enjoy fishing!
